I missed 5 fasts, what should I do?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Im 40 years old. I missed 5 rozas 2 years back. Now I am in second ramazan but unable to keep those 5 missed fasts. Can i pay fidya or do i have to keep the missed fasts?

Please correct fidya is 1.6 kg of wheat?

Thanks Wsalam

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.

If you missed your fasts of Ramadhaan, you will have to make qadhaa (make up) for the missed fasts by fasting. If you have good health, and you are able to fast, fidya for missed fasts is not valid. If you are unable to fast due to health reasons and there is no hope of recovery, then only fidya can be given for the missed fasts. In that case, the fidya is 1.6kg of wheat or it`s equivalent value in your area. [i]

You state that you missed the fasts. If you missed the fasts by breaking the fasts without a valid reason in Shariah, then kaffarah too will be compulsory which is 60 consecutive fasts.[ii]
