About Ishraq Salat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

Is there any difference between Ishraq and Duha? After the sunrise some people wait 10 minutes some 20 minutes, how long you have to wait after sunrise? And the reward of Hajj and Umrah, what does that reward mean?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

  • Ishraq is the prayer offered after the sunrise when the sun gets so much brightness that it becomes difficult to have a continuous glance at it.
  • When the sun gets high quite enough and the sunshine becomes intense, the timing of which is stated to be the quarter of the day i.e., 10, 11 a.m., then to pray two or four raka’at is called Salat ud Duha. Its virtue is proven from the Hadith. However, the Ulama have called both Salat the Salat ud Duha. To pray Salat after the sunrise is Ishraq and the Salat a little before the زوال (midday) is called Chasht.
  • One should wait for 15 to 20 minutes after the sunrise for the Ishraq Salat and though the time for the Chasht Salat starts from the Ishraq time however, it is better to pray it at the quarter of the day i.e., exactly between the sunrise and the midday.
  • The virtue of praying Ishraq is that of a Hajj and an Umrah. One of the meanings of this as told by the interpreters of the Hadith is that one is the real reward of the person performing the Hajj and the Umrah which is fixed and determined and one is the over and above and prize reward. Hence, the reward of the Hajj and Umrah on this action though will in reality be equal to original reward of one performing the Hajj and Umrah however, if one in reality performs Hajj or Umrah then the reward for the Ishraq Salat will not be equal to the prize reward he is given with the Hajj and Umrah. Second meaning is that the relationship between the reward of Fajr and Ishraq is the same as it is between the Hajj and Umrah.
