Committing major sins after reciting du’as that promise forgiveness

There is a Hadith about praising Allah after eating food which mentions your past and future sins are forgiven. does this mean I can eat pork, gamble and miss Salah?

Answer

The Hadith you are referring to can be seen here.

Hadiths of this nature refer to the minor sins being forgiven. The sins you have mentioned are major sins which are only forgiven by virtue of sincere tawbah.

(Refer: Al Minhaj of Imam Nawawi)

Hadiths of this nature are not encouraging one to commit sins. A believer should abstain from sins as far as possible. If per chance a person commits a minor sin, then if Allah wills, du’as and actions of this nature will be an atonement for the sin.

Secondly, a person has no guarantee that the du’a he recited will definitely be accepted in the court of Allah Ta’ala. Allah forbid, a person may continue sinning having hope on Hadiths of this nature only to find on the day of Qiyamah that these du’a were not accepted!

May Allah Ta’ala protect and Forgive us.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
