Hadith about one who passes away en route to Hajj

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

A narration mentions that a person who passes away whilst on their way for Hajj or Umrah will receive the reward of performing Hajj / Umrah till the day of Qiyamah. Does this Hadith refer to a person who passes away whilst in Ihram only on the way to Makkah Mukarramah or it includes for instance a person before Hajj passes away in Madinah Munawwarah (as he went to Madinah Munawwarah before coming to Makkah Mukarramah for Hajj as is the case generally) or if a person passes away after arriving in Makkah Mukarramah completing the Umrah and is now out of Ihram waiting for the 8th of Zul Hijjah as well? (as the tragedy that occurred in the Haram prior to the days of Hajj this year)

Answer

The words of the Hadith are as follows:

‘Whoever sets out for Hajj and dies, will receive the reward of Hajj till the day of Qiyamah.’

(Musnad Abi Ya’la, Hadith: 6327. Also see Targhib, vol.2 pg.178)

The Hadith doesn’t mention ihram, and therefore includes those mentioned in your query.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
