What happens after a person passes away

Q: What happens after one dies. After one is questioned is the body dead until the Day of Judgement or is the persons punishment started upon burial. Also is the deceased aware of what’s happening in the world after burial. Does the rooh (sprit) of the decease ever visit the world to see what’s happening amongst their family and friends?

A: After a person leaves this world, he is given another life which is regarded as the life of the barzak (life of the grave). The pious are blessed with certain bounties in the next life and the sinners are punished in the grave for the sins they have committed. As a rule the deceased do not know of the conditions that prevail in the world unless they are informed by Allah Ta’ala.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
