Masnun Qira-ah in witr salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is the following found in Hadith?

Reading of Surah Ikhlas in first rak’ah of Witr, Surah Falaq in second rak’ah of Witr and Surah Naas in third rak’ah of Witr.

Answer

1. Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) would [also] recite the following in the 3 rak’ats of witr:

Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq and Surah Nas.

(Tahawi, vol.1 pg.285)

This has also been reported as the habit of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu)

(Fadailul Quran of Ibn Durays, Hadith: 292 and Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 6946)

2. It is also sunnah to recite the following surahs instead of the above:

Surah A’la, Surah Kafirun and Surah ikhlas.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1418-1419 and Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 462-463)

This is the more popular format.

See: Sharhul Ihya, vol.3 pg.354-355.
