Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) changed the name of ‘Umar’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) daughter

What is the status of this narration?

Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) had a daughter whose name was ‘Asiyah and Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) changed her name to Jamilah.

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration in his Sahih. The Hadith is therefore authentic.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) had a daughter by the name of ‘Asiyah (عاصية- which means disobedient). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) changed her name to Jamilah (جميلة- which means beautiful).

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2139)
