Answer

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Allah Ta’ala will call out [on the Day of Qiyamah]: “Oh Adam!”

Adam (‘alayhis salam) will reply: “I am present, glory be to You and all good is in Your control.”

Allah will say: “Gather the people of the fire.”

Adam will say: “O Allah! How many are the people of the Fire?”

Allah will reply: “Nine-hundred and ninety-nine of every one thousand.”

It will be at that time that young people will go gray – every pregnant female will have a miscarriage, and one will think mankind intoxicated, yet they will not be intoxicated, and dreadful will be the punishment of Allah [Surah Haj, Ayah: 2].”

The companions of the Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked: “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)! Who is that one [out of one thousand]?”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: “Rejoice; there will be one of you and one thousand from Gog and Magog.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) also said: “By that Being who controls my life, I hope that you [my ummah] will be one quarter of the people of Jannah.”

The companions of the Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) shouted: “Allahu Akbar!”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) continued: “By that Being who controls my life, I hope that you [my ummah] will be one third of the people of Jannah.”

The companions of the Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) shouted, “Allahu Akbar!”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then said: “I hope that you will be half of the people of Jannah.”

The companions of the Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) shouted, “Allahu Akbar!”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) added: “You are -in comparison to the rest of mankind- like a single black hair on the skin of a white ox or like a single white hair on the skin of a black ox.”

Explanation

For explanatory purposes, the last line may be read as follows: “You [Muslims, compared to other nations in number] are like a single black hair on the skin of a white ox or like a single white hair on the skin of a black ox [i.e. very few].

This was a timeless analogy to illustrate the numbers of our Ummah as opposed to the countless other nations and peoples of the past, thereby explaining the larger ratio of the number of the other nations in Jahannam.
