Sayyiduna Abu Bakr’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) desire to pass away on a Monday

Is there any virtue for passing away on a Monday? I have heard that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) made du’a for death on a Monday.

Answer

Since our Beloved Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) left this world on a Monday, a person may also desire to pass away on a Monday, following Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) did indeed desire to pass away on Monday. Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this under: ‘The Chapter of [the virtue of] Death on a Monday’.

‘Allamah ‘Ayni (rahimahullah) states, ‘This chapter explains the virtue of passing away on a Monday.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1387, ‘Umdatul Qari, before Hadith: 1387)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) has quoted Ibnul Munayyir (rahimahullah): ‘None has a choice in specifying the time of death. However, there is allowance in adopting means when trying to attain it [like having a desire/making du’a] when a person is seeking blessings [tabarruk]. If a person’s du’a is not answered, he will be rewarded [insha Allah] for his desire/wish.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1387 and ‘Umdatul Qari, before Hadith: 1387)

‘Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri (rahimahullah) has quoted ‘Allamah Suyuti who states, ‘Since Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) passed away on a Monday, it is [among] the best days to pass away [like on a Friday].

(Faydul Bari, Hadith: 1387)
