Is It Permissible to Become a Beautician?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Is it haram to go into a career in the beauty industry? This involves doing hair, makeup, waxing eyebrows, doing nails, and fake eyelashes.

Answer: Thank you for your question. Details of your question are answered in the link below.

The short answer is yes. A woman is allowed to beautify another woman to earn a halal living, because there are permissible uses for it, such as beautifying herself for her husband. She is not directly responsible for the sin of the ladies who go out of the house uncovered.

My teachers in Jordan have always preferred that this not be a first career choice for women because of indirectly assisting in sin. If one does choose this career path, one should be careful to follow all other legal rulings in the salon such as: not playing impermissible music, not allowing smoking, not using brushes made with boar bristles, and not using human hair extensions.
