Position of Smoking

  What is the position in the Shafi madhab of smoking? Is there a difference with regards to how it is smoked, i.e., cigarette, shisha(hookah), etc.?

Asalaamu Alaykum

All of the scholars who we have asked about it agree that it is haram. It is also mentioned as such in the texts of the madhab.

باب النجاسة  ( هي كل مسكر مائع ) كالخمر , وهي المتخذة من ماء العنب , والنبيذ كالمتخذ من الزبيب واحترز هنا بمائع المزيد على المحرر عن البنج وغيره من الحشيش المسكر فإنه حرام ليس بنجس , قاله في الدقائق . ولا ترد عليه الخمرة المعقودة فإنها مائع في الأصل بخلاف الحشيش المذاب . قوله : (عن البنج ) ونحوه من كل ما فيه تخدير وتغطية للعقل فهو طاهر وإن حرم تناوله , ولذلك قال بعض مشايخنا : ومنه الدخان المشهور , وهو كذلك لأنه يفتح مجاري البدن ويهيئها لقبول الأمراض المضرة , ولذلك ينشأ عنه الترهل والتنافيس ونحوها , وربما أدى إلى العمى كما هو محسوس مشاهد , وقد أخبر من يوثق به أنه يحصل منه دوران الرأس أيضا , ولا يخفى أن هذا أعم ضررا من المكمور الذي حرم الزركشي أكله لضرره
