Praying Makeups in Congregation

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Sidi Moustafa Elqabbany

Can you pray qada prayers in jama’ah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

It is not sinful to offer makeup (qada’) prayers in congregation, but the exact ruling varies:

1. Offering a makeup prayer behind someone offering a current prayer is disliked (makruh). The opposite is also disliked.

2. Offering a makeup prayer behind someone offering a different makeup prayer (like praying Dhuhr behind someone praying `Asr) is contrary to what is preferred (Ar. khilaf al-awla). This is less serious than doing something that is disliked.

3. Offering a makeup prayer behind someone offering the same makeup prayer is sunna, even if the imam and follower are offering makeups from different days.

And Allah the Exalted knows best.
