What is the ruling on using e-cigarette and e-hookah?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Darul Iftaa Jordan
What is the ruling on using e-cigarette and e-hookah?

Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allah The Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.

E-cigarette and hookah are types of e-smoking devices that many companies are promoting nowadays as an alternative for traditional cigarettes and hookah. However, these contain many poisonous materials which destroy people's health, and-in this regard-Allah, The most Exalted, said (What means): for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil " [Al-A'raf/157]. And there is no doubt that whatever damages one`s health is pure evil.

In addition, the Ministry of Health has clarified that e-cigarette and hookah have the same poisonous materials that already exist in traditional ones, and warned against importing or dealing with such products in Jordan.

Moreover, World Health Organization (WHO) warns that e-cigarette has high levels of poison, and denies the allegations that it helps people quit smoking.

Further, Islamic Sharia urged responsible Muslims to save their souls and assets since Allah, The most Exalted said (What means):" and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction." [Al-Baqara/195]. From the view point of specialists, any act that might cause harm to one`s health is prohibited in Sharia.

Therefore, using e-cigarette and hookah is prohibited in order to save money and avoid possible health risks. And Allah knows best.
