Changing the Name (AbdulMahdi)

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Darul Iftaa Jordan
I want to change my name, which is (AbdulMahdi) to (Mahdi). What is the ruling of Sharia on this?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

The name (AbdulMahdi) is a compound name that consists of two words, (Abd) and (Mahdi), and it isn`t amongst the beautiful Names of Allah.

In principle, such name should be added to one of Allah`s beautiful names because none is worthy of worship except Allah. Thus, this name wasn`t used by Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama`a; rather, they used the name (AbdulHadi). Accordingly, we advise the questioner to change his name to (Mahdi) or (AbdulHadi). And Allah the Almighty knows best.

This answer was collected from the official government Iftaa Department of Jordan.
