Can one spend on ones family on the day of Aashura by giving gifts?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. When we are told to spend on our family on the day of Aashura, does it mean exchanging of gifts or simply buying little extra for the household groceries or a special meal? Please clarify what is meant by it. I have been asked what gifts have I bought for my kids and parents.

A. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whoever generously spends on his family on the day of ‘Aashura, Allah Ta’ala will expand his sustenance (Barakah) for the rest of that year.”

Spending on ones family on the day of Aashura is not restricted to giving or exchanging of gifts. It is general and applies to spending on ones family in terms of food, clothing and gifts as well. Therefore, it would suffice for one to spend on his/her family on the day of Aashura by giving and exchanging gifts or by making a special meal for the family. (Shaami 6/430)

Note: The above hadith is reliable and suitable for practice.
