Reciting the Quran in a melodious voice

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. What is meant by reciting Qur’aan in a melodious voice?

A. Reciting Quraan in a melodious voice refers to such a recital which softens the heart, creates humility and the fear of Allah. The aspiration to fulfil the commandments of Allah is increased and the hearts of the listeners are affected.

Whilst we acknowledge a melodious voice as pleasant and a bounty from Allah, it is however not a condition from the laws of Tajweed (correct recital of Quraan). If one has been blessed with a beautiful and melodious voice, then he should be grateful to Allah by reciting Quraan with it. On the other hand, one should not compromise giving preference to a melodious voice whist violating the laws of Tajweed.
