Q. Many men abuse their wives sometimes physically and sometimes emotionally. What is the status of physical and emotional abuse within marriages in Islam?

A. It is important to note that marriage is a relationship that is based on mutual love and respect. A couple should honor and respect the rights of each other and should not abuse one another physically or emotionally. In doing so, a marriage will be unstable and would be devoid of any blessings.

In Islam, physical and emotional abuse is totally condemned.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said “A Muslim is he who others are saved from the abuse of his tongue (emotional) and hand (physical).” (Musnad Ahmad)

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam also said “A person whose neighbor is not safe from his evil, will never enter Jannah.” (Musnad Ahmad)

May Allah protect our brothers and sisters from such abuse and may He instill love and respect in our marriages. Ameen.
