Is it permissible to buy stolen goods?:

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

I want to ask that in the south side of Chicago many black people come to shops and sell many things like Laptops, cycles, video cameras, players, cell phones etc for cheap as compare with stores (shops), is this jahiz (right) to buy things from these people and they don’t have receipt?

If you know for sure that some goods are stolen, then it is not allowed to buy them. But if you’re not sure that something is stolen and there may be possible legal alternatives for this behavior, such as –
may be he brought something from his own house; or may be he is trying to sell something which he has bought at a discounted rate; or may be he’s just one of those people who has a habit of got something cheap, and is now trying to get rid of it for a meager price etc. – then it would be permissible to purchase a suspected item. If you’re sure and you have definite knowledge that these are stolen items then you cannot buy them, otherwise you can.
