Can Parents open their sons mail?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Is it permissible for parents to open their kid’s mail without their permission? The kids are baligh but under parents guardianship- in other words they are not married yet. Do the parents have the right to touch or see their baligh kids belongings? ex. to go in their room and move stuff around or to examine things, etc. Is it true or just a superstition that giving knife as a gift to someone causes fight between the two?

The rearing and care taking of children until they become mature or are until they get married after maturity is the responsibility of parents. To see their mail or their stuff at home is permissible. A person can give knife etc. as a gift, people should not be suspicious about it.
