Is Kite Flying Haram?

Question

I enjoy kite flying ever since childhood. Is kite flying haram/shirk as per Islam?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Flying a kite is permissible provided the following:

  • The shape of the kite is not made to resemble a living thing such as a dragon.
  • It is not done to celebrate or commemorate any occasion.
  • It does not harm anyone.
  • It does not lead to neglecting one’s religious obligations, like Salaah etc.[1]
