Is use of emojis allowed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Is use of emojis allowed?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

Emojis have different characters. Those which are neither true pictures of, nor resemble living beings, like vegetables, fruits etc. are certainly allowed.

Similarly pictures of body parts (other than the face), like the hands, feet etc. are also acceptable.

But emojis of head and face showing mouth, nose and eyes, are considered pictures, and hence are not allowed.

Since use of such emojis represents publication of pictures, it should therefore be avoided.

However, if the face is erased of its identifying impressions like nose, eyes and mouth and the  figure is made to look like a “dead pan”, it would then be allowed.
