Bitcoin or any digital currency is an imaginary currency having no characteristics of a real currency.
Regarding this issue, Dar-ul-Uloom, Deoband and Jamea Uloom Islamiah, Binori Town, Karachi have issued their Fatwa which is stated below in a revised manner:
Nowadays, its buying and selling is done through the internet with its specific applications. Since Bitcoin has got no saleable property, it becomes devoid of the legal shariah sale requirements. It is actually an illusionary business based on deception and also carries a resemblance of interest and gambling. Therefore, dealings in Bitcoin or any other digital currency through the internet is not allowed under shariah law. It is also not allowed to invest in this business.

قال اللہ تعالی:وأحل اللہ البیع وحرم الربا الآیة (البقرة: ۲۷۵)،یٰأیھا الذین آمنوا إنما الخمر والمیسر والأنصاب والأزلام رجس من عمل الشیطن فاجتنبوہ لعلکم تفلحون(المائدة، ۹۰)
والعدوان (سورة المائدة، رقم الآیة: ۲)
وقال رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم:إن اللہ حرم علی أمتي الخمر والمیسر(المسند للإمام أحمد،۲: ۳۵۱، رقم الحدیث: ۶۵۱۱)،
﴿وَلَا تَأْکُلُوْا أَمْوَالَکُمْ بَیْنَکُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ﴾ أي بالحرام، یعني بالربا، والقمار، والغصب والسرقة (معالم التنزیل ۲: ۵۰)
، لأن القمار من القمر الذي یزداد تارةً وینقص أخریٰ۔ وسمی القمار قمارًا؛ لأن کل واحد من المقامرین ممن یجوز أن یذہب مالہ إلی صاحبہ، ویجوز أن یستفید مال صاحبہ، وہو حرام بالنص(رد المحتار، کتاب الحظر والإباحة،باب الاستبراء، فصل في البیع، ۹: ۵۷۷، ط: مکتبة زکریا دیوبند)۔
