Reciting Quran after the death of a person for Esal e Sawab

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assaalamualaikum,

Can we recite Quran after our beloved departed? We just want to send sawab with sincere heart and we are not asking anyone to contribute but if they want, they can send sawb. Nowadays people are prohibiting and specifically saying that do not read even saying it is bidat.

Jazakallah

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

A’la Ben Lajlaj says that my father made the will, “When I pass away then make grave for me and when you place me in the grave then say بسم اللہ وعلی ملۃ رسول اللہ then put the dust then recite the beginning and the end portion of the Surah Baqarah on my head side because I have heard Rasooullah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم saying like this” (معجم طبرانی،مجمع الزوائد). A similar statement has been narrated by Hazrat Abdullah Ben Umar رضی اللہ عنہ too (شعب الایمان). Similarly in Kanzul A’amaal it is narrated from Hazrat Ali رضی اللہ عنہ to recite Surah Ikhlas, and in Sharhus Sudur from Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضی اللہ عنہ to bestow the reward of Surah Fatihah, Surah Ikhlas, and Surah Takathur to the deceased. On the basis of this kind of narrations (which on collective basis are of the حسن Hasan status) the Muhaddithin and the Jurists have declared the act of bestowing the reward to be مستحب (Mustahab). However, one should be particular to avoid the customary ways, fixing of the days and the months, etc., other customs, and nonsense activities.
