Dear mufti sahib, there is a video and message circulating on the social media in which people are telling others that calling this dish “Haleem” as Haleem is considered incorrect and sinful. They are making the case that since Haleem is the name of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘ala, it is incorrect to call a food with the same name, instead they are suggesting to call it “Daleem”. The issue is, we have been eating this dish Haleem for so long especially during the month of Ramadhan, but are now worried that are we being sinful and should we not call this dish by this name anymore?

Haleem is a common noun and such words can have several different meanings. The context in which a word is used defines its true and appropriate meanings. Since Haleem is a name of a dish, the use of the word Haleem in that context is correct. Such examples can be found in general Arabic language as well is in the Quran. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘ala has used this word for his creation in the Quran as well, which is a proof in itself that this word can be used for things or objects and not just with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘ala. However, out of taqwa (being precautious) and the respect and reverence for the name of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘ala, if someone wants to use another name for this dish, then that will be considered preferable.
