Question: We are planning to go for Umra in a  near future.  Would like to know if there is any harm in going to Medina first?  It’s easier this way due to the long flight from the US and avoiding putting ihram in the plane.

Answer: assalamu `alaykum

I pray you are well.

May Allah bless you and your family in your journey to His Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) and His holy house.

There is no harm in visiting the Prophet of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) before embarking on one’s Umra. Visiting the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) is amongst the most emphasized recommended actions that our religion has prescribed.

One should make it a point to learn the etiquettes of visiting the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) before embarking on such a noble journey. These include sending abundant blessings on the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) before, during, and after one’s journey, entering his city and mosque in a pure and beautiful state by bathing and wearing one’s best clothes, standing in front of the Prophet (Allah bless him and greant him peace) with humility, awe, and deference as one would if he were alive in the worldly sense, and making abundant invocation to Allah for the forgiveness of one’s sins while thanking Him for the favor He has bestowed one by allowing him or her to visit His most select slave.
