Was Minhaj al-Abidin Authored By Imam Ghazali?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

I have the book Minhaj al ‘Abidin at home (in Arabic). Is it correctly attributed to Imam Ghazali (Allah have mercy upon him) and should I read it?

Answer:

Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

There is a longstanding difference of opinion on whether Imam Ghazali (Allah have mercy upon him) actually authored Minhaj al-Abidin.

Whether he authored it or not, the scholars have held that this work is certainly “Ghazalian” in its method and teachings; and have found it a deeply beneficial work to study, teach, and be transformed by.

This is why it has been in the spiritual teaching curricula around the world—and is part of Level Three of the Seekers Islamic Studies Curriculum.

It was also a major inspiration for numerous other works in practical spirituality, such as Imam Birgivi’s al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya, which is also taught here at SeekersGudiance.

And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
