What Do I Do If I Constantly Fear Falling Into Kufr?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question:

As Salaamu Alaykum.

If I constantly fear falling into kufr and ask SG about this, for example, and in that period of waiting for a response, if a question comes to me saying, are you Muslim. I respond Allah knows my state, am I having doubt in my faith, and could this be dangerous also and if I respond yes, I am Muslim, but then the thought comes that you haven’t received a response yet so are you calling someone that is kufr as not being so, what should I do in this case?

Answer:Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,

I pray you are well.

My dear brother, you have a lot of OCD around this issue. This is clear from your questions. I advise you to stay away from theological arguments and discussions that will feed this tendency.

All you need to do is say is, “I believe in everything Allah has revealed – as He intended it; and I believe in everything the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) as he intended it.“ That is sufficient for your iman. Don’t engage in any theological discussions or anything to do with kufr and takfir.

Ignore any ‘feelings’ or ‘sensations’ in your body, as this can be a manifestation of OCD. An example of this could be a feeling of tightness in your chest when kufr is mentioned.

Please find a qualified therapist and get some treatment for the OCD. It may take some time, but see it as your struggle to get closer to Allah. Healing from this will enrich your practice of the din.

May Allah facilitate matters for you.
Abdul-Rahim
