Is It Necessary To Give My Zakat to the People of My Village Back Home?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org
Question:
Is it necessary to give my zakat to the people of my village back home?
Answer:
Dear questioner,
Thank you for your important question.
May Allah, Most High reward you for your desire to increase in knowledge.
You may give Zakat to any legally poor or needy Muslim individual, regardless of where they live. You are not obligated to give Zakat to one specific village etc.
It is recommended to begin giving Zakat to those poor Muslims who are of your locality or those who are most in need, wherever they may be. [Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Razi, Tuhfat al-Muluk]
And Allah alone knows best,
[Ustadh] Omar Popal
