Is it permitted for a lady to have long nails on her hands?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah the Inspirer of truth.

Part of the natural aspects of human cleanliness is the clipping of the nails. The Messenger of Allah mentioned the clipping of the nails among the aspects of fitra. He said: “Five acts are akin to fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, cutting the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits, and clipping (or shaving) the moustache (Bukhari, Muslim Ahmed, Tirmidhi).

It is reprehensible to leave the nails so that they grow long (Al-Durr al-Mukhtar 5:260) even if it be for one’s husband. It is excessively disliked (makruh tahrimi) if they are left uncut for over forty days due to another narration related by Imam Muslim (Radd al-Muhtar 5:261).

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam

Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf
