Is It Permissible To Cry While Reciting The Qur’an?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera

Is it permissible to cry while reciting the Qur’an?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah the Inspirer of truth.

It is completely permissible to cry when one is reciting the Qur’an, especially when relevant verses are recited. Many of the scholars and pious of this umma would become overwhelmed with tears when reciting the Qur’an.

It is not an option for those with a soft heart: they are overwhelmed by the power of Allah’s words, and they weep in reverent fear of Him, especially at the mention of the punishment of the Hell-fire and the turmoil of the day of Judgment. This is the case whether one is reciting or listening to the Qur’an, and whether one is in Tarawih. Many scholars have considered weeping to be an etiquette of reciting the Qur’an (Fazail Qur’an).

May Allah grant us all the sweetness of the Qur’an and illuminate our hearts with it.

Wassalam

Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf
