My question is regarding cursing… In a nutshell, my mother cursed me when she was upset over a matter of which I had no part in – this cursing was quite severe – she was very emotional I didn’t say nothing back…this was 3 years ago. I know and believe that Allah is just and that if I am affected by it Allah is testing me, but I do believe Allah won’t let it affect me as I strongly and firmly believe he is just and is all-knowing. I explained later to my mum regarding the hadith prohibiting cursing. 3 years on, things are going downhill – I am in a bad metal state; I have been told (by an amil) I am suffering from the effects of black magic; my family has drifted and my mother isn’t the sweet kind hearted person she used to be, i.e. bitterness and hatred has taken over her. My question is regarding cursing – how does one know whether the curse has been accepted – i.e. what are the signs – are my symptoms the sign?
Wa `alaykum as-Salam wa rahmatullah:
A curse pronounced in a state of excessive anger, without thought, or ignorantly, or in a state of mental instability etc. is not accepted even from a parent and Allah knows best. Otherwise, most of the general population of the Arab world is cursed because the uneducated public in that part of the world (both Christians and Muslims) routinely curse their own children and one another’s parents…. May Allah have mercy on us all.
In the morning after waking up and in the evening before going to bed, out-loud or in your heart:
1. Repeat shahada three times
2. Astaghfirullah 70x
3. Fatiha 1x
4. Last two verses of Surat al-Baqara (Amana ar-Rasul)
5. Surat Inshirah (Alam nashrah laka sadrak) 7x
6. Surat Ikhlas (Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad) 11x
7. Surat Falaq 1x
8. Surat Nas 1x
9. La ilaha illallah 10x
10. Darud (Allahumma Salli `ala Muhammadin wa`ala Ali Muhammadin wa Sallim) 10x
11. Fatiha 1x gifted to the Prophet and his Family and all Awliya
12. Blow to your right and left as well as on your person.
13. Make du`a of tawassul through the Prophet, which is:
“O Allah, I am turning to you by means of your Prophet Muhammad for the fulfillment of my need. O Muhammad, I am turning by means of you to my Lord. O Allah, pair me with him.”
Allahumma inni atawassalu ilayka bi-Nabiyyika Muhammad li-qada’i haajati. Ya Muhammad, tawassaltu bika ila Rabbi. Allahumma shaffi`hu fiyya.
Then you mention your need(s).
If you encounter anger in your relatives or surroundings repeat YA HALEEM in your heart or out-loud.
Precede every important act with the Basmala and ask for its Baraka, especially eating.
Keep dhikr of Allah in your heart at all times, in company and alone.
May He keep you and yours safe here and hereafter. Was-Salam,
