The Sunnahs for Zuhr and Friday Prayer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

I’m sorry to keep dragging out this Question, but i really need to know… normally, zuhr prayer is 4 sunnah, 4 fard, 2 sunnah, right? now, friday prayer is 4 sunnah, 2 fard (with jamaat), and then 4 sunnah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

What you say is correct. Zuhr is [4 sunna, then 4 fard, then 2 sunna]. The Friday prayer, for one praying in congregation, is: [4 sunnah, then 2 fard, then 4 sunna].

However:

  1. It is recommended (mustahabb) to add 2 rakats to the sunna after the Zuhr fard, to make it 4 rakats.
  2. Of course, if not praying with the congregation, one prays Zuhr normally (4 rakats), with the normal sunnas of Zuhr (4 before, 2 after). For men to leave the congregation without a legally-valid excuse (‘even in the West’) is a serious sin from which immediate remorse, and repentance is obligatory. In such a case, one must pray Zuhr within the time.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
