Can I Pray in My Pajamas?

Can I pray in my pajamas?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, the inspirer of truth. All praise is to Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate, and all blessings and peace to our Master Muhammad, his family, companions, and those who follow them.

Walaikum assalam,

1. It is recommended for both men and women to pray in dignified clothes, when reasonably possible. Dignified clothes are those one would wear in front of respectable people, because Allah is most deserving of our propriety. It is somewhat disliked to pray wearing clothes one would not wear in front of respectable people, such as western pajamas. [r: Radd al-Muhtar] This is not sinful, however.

2. Note, however, that the dislikedness is for the action itself, not the prayer per se. It remains obligatory to perform one’s obligatory prayers, even if one is too lazy to put on dignified clothes. Therefore, this should not prevent one from performing one’s supererogatory night prayers.

3. The scholars mention that if you are not of the righteous, then at least do that which the righteous do, and you’ll become of them.

May Allah make us of the righteous, of those whom He loves and who have the honor of loving Him.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
