RE: leading Friday prayers at school

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

In my old school and college, there is an Islamic society, run by brothers there. They have Dhuhr prayers everyday, including Jumu’ah on Fridays. I wanted to know if it is permissible for one of the senior brothers, who has been informed of the format in which it is conducted, to lead the Jumu’ah prayers. Usually that is exactly what happens there: A brother gives a brief Khutba and then leads the prayer. These brothers are generally good in their behaviour, and have some knowledge of Islam. Is this allowed?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

There is nothing wrong, and much benefit in holding Friday prayers in such a situation.

The individuals giving the khutba, though, should know the essentials of the fiqh of Friday prayer. Some of this may be found by searching for “Friday prayer” at www.sunnipath.com, and also in any good fiqh book.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
