Work Situations and Potential Haram…

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is it permissible to work in the following places:
1. in a library or bookstore where one would be handling books, magazines, etc , in direct opposition to Islamic teachings
2. in women’s clothing stores where unislamic attire is being sold
3. managing a doctor’s office where the doctor sees male and female patients, orders tests where the Islamic rules of gender interaction are not used;
Generally, the question is in regards to working in environments that do not function Islamically.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray that you are well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good in this life and the next.

The general principle in the Hanafi school is that if one’s own work or service is permissible, then it will be permitted to perform even if someone then uses it in a haram manner. However, one should dislike such subsequent actions, and it is recommended (but not obligatory) to avoid the work or service when possible without undue hardship–such as when one has reasonable alternatives available.

[1] Working in a library is permitted, because one’s work itself is permissible, and one is not considered assisting others when they themselves chose to do the wrong in such matters.
[2] It is permitted to sell “un-Islamic attire” because it has some potentially permissible uses–such as wearing at home for one’s spouse in intimate situations. However, when one has a clear choice (e.g. alternative employment is available or it is one’s own store) then it is recommended to avoid such situations.
[3] In such a situation, one could gently suggest keeping the door open, for example. After that, if they don’t, you’re not held responsible.

Jazakum Allah khayr.
And Allah alone gives success.
