Umrah Performed Incorrectly

Question

Asalamu alaikum,

I went for Umrah around 2 weeks ago. I performed Wudhu in the hotel, and went to complete Umrah. As I started or was about to begin the tawaf, I passed wind and subsequently my wudhu nullified. I didn’t complete ablution again and carried on, and passed wind a number of times during the course of tawaf and Sa’ee (the seven rounds of Safa and Marwah).

Also should the Umrah be performed straight away or can one rest, prior to going for Umrah rituals.

I came back to the hotel and took off the ihram sheets and changed to normal dress to rest. I enquired the following day how I should re-compensate for this, I was told to complete tawaf again in the state of wudhu whilst wearing Ihram sheets as I was still in Makkah.

I didn’t do this as I had already exited Ihram once and didn’t think I could assume Ihram directly at Makkah without first visiting Meeqat area. Also some rules of Ihram had also been broken such as using soap etc.

I left it as it was performed, subsequently visited Madina and have now arrived back at my home country.

What do I need to do to make up for this grave error from my part? Is a dam is to be paid how and who do I pay this to? Are there any reliable organisations where this penalty can be paid to?

Also, are there are any Ihram sheets that can be worn for people with dyspraxia as I had difficulties in doing worship in these clothes as the clothes would constantly come off.

If a dam penalty is necessary, does this suffice for the error in the Umrah or is this a penalty for the violation and the Umrah has not been completed/accepted.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Answer:

If umrah was performed without wudu, as is the case with you, and then you returned home without repeating the tawaf, a dam will be due.[1]

Although the umrah does not need to be performed straight away, you should have remained in the ihram clothing. If you wore stitched clothing for less than a day, then you will be liable for sadaqah. If it was more than a day, then it would be a dam.[2]

The sadaqah is half a Sa’. The sadaqah can be given anywhere, however, the dam is one sheep and must be made in Makkah.[3]

It is advisable that you contact your travel agent to make contact for paying your offenses.

For future reference, it would be permitted to wear a money belt around the waist. So this can be used to hold the ihram in place if you are having difficulty.[4]
