Working at a Convenience Store: Selling Pork & Lotteries

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I work at a convenience store that sells many things including lottery and pork. Since I work behind the cash register, I have to sell the lottery tickets and ham sandwiches even though it hurts me to see some people waste too much money on the lottery. My question is whether it is permissible to work in this store, since 90% of the store’s items are halal like soda and candy. I would also like to know whether the money I am earning is haram money. If the money is haram, is it permissible to donate that money to the local masjid or does the money need to be thrown away into the garbage?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Wa Alaykum Assalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

The essential goal of believers is to seek the good and to avoid the bad, understanding that the good and bad are what Allah has determined to be good or bad.

You can work on the counter when unlawful items are sold, but you cannot ‘assist’ customers in acquiring the haram.

Faraz Rabbani.
