Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
I have this book called the names of Allah. It gives all 99 names and in it it says that if u say each name a certain number of times, you will gain some reward or something amazing will happen. for instance it says that he who writes ya qabid on fifty pieces of food for 40 days, he/she will be free from hunger. I do not know how far to believe this. Therefore I was wondering whether you could tell me the rewards and benefits of saying each of Allah’s names and whether I should believe this book judging from the little that I have told you
Salam `alaykum:
The glorious beautiful Names have special attributes that may be characterized as properties and effects, however, these secrets of the Names are transmitted to students only by qualified Shaykhs, not by books.
One who repeats the Names or one of the Names without authorization may be harmed rather than helped. At the very least, one should practice the devotions that the Sunna teaches and that are enough to keep busy in a way that is sure to please Allah Most High because it is the Sunna of His Beloved Prophet, upon him peace.
Examples: Reciting Ayat al-Kursi after each Salat, then Subhan Allah, al-Hamdu lillah, Allahu Akbar 33 times each, Bismillah before every important matter, the du`as upon exiting and entering the house or the latrine, the du`as upon visiting the sick or the dead, the du`as upon eating or sleeping or waking, istighfar and invocations of blessings upon the Prophet, etc.
Was-Salam
