Donating reward to the deceased

My co-worker had asked a question on another fiqh site about what to do at funerals: Can the family members do Khatam and does the reward of Khatam or Yaseen goes to the dead person? The Mufti answered him by saying: “The practice of mourning the death by reciting Qur’an or Khatam has no basis in Shari’a. My co-worker was not satisfy with this answer, and he asked me about the issue, so I promised him that I will ask our teachers at www.SunniPath.com, Sidi can you please explain this Masal’a in detail.
