When should the walima be held and by whom?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What is the requirement for Walima? Is it necessary that the bridegroom has sex with his bride and then has the walima the next day. If the bride has her periods on the wedding night and the bridegroom cannot have sex with her can the walima be performed the next day? Will the walima be valid or not? Please answer in the light of Quran and Sunnah.

A: It is sunnat for the bridegroom to arrange the walimah. If the bride or her party wishes to help the bridegroom in any way they may do so. The actual sunnah is to have the walimah after sharing the bed.
