Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it true that the Rasulullah Alaihis Salaam gave his Mubarak grandsons gifts of money on Eid day? If so will exchanging of gifts not be Sunnat on Eid day?

Exchanging Gifts on the Day of Eid

A: We have not come across this report in the reliable books of Hadith. However, exchanging gifts on a happy occasion (e.g. Eid, Nikah) is permissible.
