Hadith with regards to exchanging gifts

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What’s the hadith about always accepting a gift from another muslim? Does this refer to non mahrams as well?

Bismillaah

A: Exchanging gifts is a means of increasing mahabbat and acquiring the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. The hadith refers to exchanging gifts among those people with whom one is allowed to associate with. As far as exchanging gifts for wrong reasons or with people we are not allowed to associate with (eg. na mahrams), since this is a means of earning the displeasure of Allah Ta’ala we are not allowed to exchange gifts with them.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
