Q: Is exchanging gifts with the couple’s families when they get married permissible? Or is it just a custom that everybody follows?
A: It is permissible for the families to exchange gifts. However the intention should be to create love between the two families and not to show or out do one another. Also a person should only give gifts if it is within his means and should not unnecessarily take credit in order to give customary gifts.
