My Wife Wants a Talaaq Because of My Social Media Habits and Her Hijab: Advice Needed

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am a job holder. I have colleagues and friends on my fb profile. I do like or comment such as looking pretty on my female friends pictures. My wife does hijab. When we go out for lunch in a restaurant I ask her to uncover her mouth to eat but she disagrees and we fight sometimes. Even when we go on a long drive and I ask her to uncover her face she disagrees as well. She is making issues out of these things and wants a talaaq. I do pray five times a day but I watch tv, etc. Adding all these things up, she seeks talaaq. Can you please advise.

A: You should be grateful to Allah Ta’ala for being blessed with a spouse that is pure, chaste and who wishes to observe purdah in her life. In the anti Islamic environment that we live in, wherein we find ourselves engulfed by fitnah and various challenges against Islam, it is indeed a great favour of Allah Ta’ala upon a person that Allah Ta’ala keeps him steadfast upon Islam.

Speaking to strange women and being casual with them is totally impermissible and against the teachings of Islam. Similarly, interacting with unscrupulous people and people who are not committed to Deen are among the main causes for the breakdown of marriages. You should sincerely repent to Allah Ta’ala for your sins and immediately begin observing strict purdah with all strange women. Appreciate your wife and fulfil her rights. May Allah Ta’ala improve your relationship with your wife and bless you with immense barakah in your marriage.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
