Doubts After Urinating

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Question:

I want to ask that after urinating, I press my penis from bottom to top and wipe the urine drops until it stops. After the urine drops stop coming, I wash my penis with water. When I shower, and my hand touches my penis, the hole of my penis opens. Flowing water goes in. My question is, when that water comes back out, will it break my wuḍū. I am very much concerned about this and in the past, I have suffered from OCD, related to najāsah (impurities). Am I being over conscious about this or not? Please answer as I am very disturbed by this and cannot even pray with a clear mind.

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for contacting Mathābah.

In response to your concern, note that we are responsible for the external cleanliness and purity of our private organs. After urinating, a male is required to do their best to clear out urine from the urethra and meatus of the penis. – (See: Rad-Al-Muḥtār, Page 558, Volume 1, Dār Al-Ālam Al-Kutub)[1]

The author of Nūr Al-Iḍāḥ writes,

“On passing urine, a person must ensure that the leakage of urine has stopped and his mind is satisfied concerning the issue. This is achieved through one’s regular habits, such as walking, coughing, or leaning on one’s side. [The woman is not required to do this. She is to wait a small time and then clean herself.] It is not permissible to commence wuū until one is satisfied that the leakage or urine has stopped.” – (See: Nūr al Iḍāḥ, Page 63, Dar Al-Bashāir)[2]

Droplets of urine coming out of the penis will break the wuū (ritual ablution). Also remember the fiqh principle ‘doubt does not break certainty’. Thus, in your situation, if you are doubting and there is no certainty of urine droplets exiting, your wuū remains intact.  – (See: Al-Qawāid Al-Fiqhīyyah, page 15, Dār Al-Tirmidhī)[3]

“The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) happened to pass by two graves and said, “They (the occupants) are being punished, however, they are not being punished for grievous sins. One of them carried tales and the other did not keep himself safe from being impure by urine droplets.” – (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 292)[4]

Only Allāh knows best.
