Is it Sinful to Point Feet Towards the Qibla?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org
Answered by Shaykh Yūsuf Badāt

Question:

We often sleep in our rooms with our feet pointed towards the qibla (direction for ritual prayer). Would it be a sin?

Answer:

In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.

Lying down or sleeping with the feet facing the qibla is against the etiquettes of respect to the qibla. If someone does so, it would not be sinful unless done with the intention to desecrate the sanctity of the prayer direction.

Ḥanafī and Ḥanbalī jurists consider this act to be disliked (makrūh) as it constitutes disrespect and disregard to the direction of prayer.

“If one observes the sanctity of the symbols of God, then such things emanate from the piety of the hearts.” (Qurʾān 22:32)
