Are These Animals Halaal?

Question:

Respected Mufti Saheb,    Assalamualaikum 
 
Further to our email on the issue of Kangaroo meat sent to you previously, kindly also supply the Halaal status or otherwise of the under mentioned herbivorous species:
  • Elephant
  • Zebra
  • Kangaroo
  • Giraffe
Kindly enlighten the Shar’i principle adopted by the Madhaahibê arba’ah in determining the hurmat of animals.

Answer:

 

 

Zebra

In Arabic it is called Himaarul Wahshi. It being Halaal is unanimously agreed upon

Elephant

It is Haraam according to Ahnaaf, Shafi’ee and Ahmad. Al Mughnee Pg. 321 Vol. 13, Kitaabul Majmoo’, Pg 15 Vol. 9, Muheetul Burhaani Pg 415 Vol. 8 Kitaabus Sayd.

Giraffe

A lot of Ulama have accepted it to be a herbivore and have pronounced it to be Halaal. We prefer the opinion of those who said that it is not Haraam. See under giraffe in Hayaatul Hayawaan.

Kangaroo

Unfortunately we couldn’t find anything regarding the kangaroo in our Kitaabs.
