Using Barley in Hadith

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Is there a (Sahih) Hadith regarding the use of barley?

Answer:

Abu Hazim (R.A.) reports that once I asked Sahal bin Sa’aad: “Did Nabi (S.A.W.) ever eat pure well baked bread?” Sahal (R.A.) replied: “Since the time Nabi (S.A.W.) was appointed as a prophet until his demise, I have never seen him eat bread of that sought.” “Did you people not possess sieves in the Prophet’s time then?” I asked. “The Prophet had never seen sieved flour.” Was the reply. I asked: “Then how did you people eat unstrained barley.” Sahal (R.A.) explained: “We use to crush the barley and then blow through it (as if sifting it), whatever remained was made into a dough of which we use to partake.” (Saheeh Bukhari, Vol. 2, Page 815)
