Stunning Animal After Slaughtering

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Respected Mufti Saheb,                 Assalamualaikum

We make Du’aa that you’re enjoying good health.

One of the abattoirs regulated by our organisation have introduced a ritual slaughter box where the cattle are slaughtered without any stunning. The problem they are faced with is that the cattle takes approximately 5 minutes to become totally motionless which delays the production line considerably.

In such instance, would it be acceptable to apply the stun after the animal has been slaughtered by the process of Shar’i Zabah?

Your input and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Wassalaam,

Answer:

Once the animal is slaughtered in the Shar’i manner i.e. taking the name of Allah and cutting the wind and the food pipe and the two blood vessels, the animal will be Halaal to consume.  However it will be Makrooh to stun the animal after slaughtering just as it is Makrooh to severe the head from the body and skin the animal before it has cooled down and becomes motionless, especially if the post-slaughter stunning affects the flowing of the blood.   (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Page 208, Jadeed Fiqhi Masaail, Vol. 1, Page 271)
