Udhiyaa (Qurbani)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum,

Respected Mufti sahib,

An organization from turkey brought money for about 300 cows and gave it to a organization in Mozambique to

conduct Qurbani. Cows are cheaper in villages so a person is sent with the money of ten cows to go to a village and

buy and slaughter there. This person goes and buys ten cows and starts slaughtering them on the day of Eid. Three

cows run away. One was found on the third day of Eid and was slaughtered before sunset.  The other was found ten

days after Eid and the third one is not found at all. What should be done now. The money of 300 was from turkey and

it is not known which person’s cow ran away ?

please guide as what to do in future.

Wassalaam.

Answer:

The cow which was found after ten days should be given in charity while it is alive.  (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Page 225-226)

However with regards to the cow which was not found, money equivalent to its value should be given in charity.  (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Page 225, Fataawaa Rahimiyyah, Vol. 6, Page 164, Vol. 2, Page 85)

In this case if the organisation gives its equivalent value in charity on behalf on the one whose cow ran away, it is hoped that the Qurbani of that person will be discharged.

Since the one whose cow who ran away is unknown, this is the only way to discharge the unknown persons Qurbani.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
